On my first evening in Shanghai, I tried to pay for dinner and my linked card was declined. The problem was fixable, but I had made the situation harder by depending on one payment method.

What happened

My Alipay account was verified and my card appeared correctly, but the bank blocked the first overseas transaction. The restaurant was busy, and I did not have enough cash for the bill.

What fixed it

I approved the transaction in my banking app, reopened Alipay and tried a smaller amount. It worked. I then set up WeChat Pay and kept a physical card plus a little RMB cash as backup.

What I would do before the next trip

I would tell my bank about the trip, test a small payment after arrival and never rely on only one app. Screenshots of the hotel address and payment setup instructions also made asking for help easier.
